A short article showing the difference between some commonly confused terms. This is aimed mostly at the adoption community, but I'm sure other areas would also find it of value.

What Are OCs

OC stands for Original Character or Own Character, it is basically a character you made up yourself. It could be a fan character or a character from something you're writing, or if you like it could just be a character who hangs about and doesn't go with a canon in particular.
If you're writing a fanfic, all the characters you made up will be OCs, not the characters from what you're writing about. All OCs are created by us, the fans.
When making adopts, most of the adopts will end up as Original Characters.

What Are Fursonas

A representation of yourself as an animal. Canines are very popular, but almost any animal can be one depending on what you choose. You can decide on how it looks and how it acts since it's your character. Most people's fursna's are what ends up on their user ID or avatar, if not just a very important OC.
The most important thing is that you can only have one fursona. Your fursona is like the dress you wear when you come on-line, and you can only wear one dress at a time.

Adoption Rules

3 min read
Just piling this together so I don't have to copy it each time.

REQUESTING FOR AN ADOPT

:bulletblack: Please don't comment unless you want to adopt, have a question or complaint. Please don't just comment and say 'cute' or 'cool' and especially not 'i like number 5' or something like that because it's really quite hard to tell if you want to adopt it or just commenting.

:bulletblack: I'm not on deviant 24/7, pleas allow a few days for me to get back. Also, when requesting for an adopt, please check the comments before you to check someone else hasn't requested it. This can isn't too bad, but can be quite annoying.

:bulletblack: Please sent me the points to my donation pool as quickly as possible. If you wait ages, someone else may come up and want it. If you haven't sent the points for a little while, i'll give it away just like that.

:bulletblack: I hate it when somebody takes half the adopts. Please only adopt one at a time, you can come back later and see if there are any that haven't been adopted.

PRICE

:bulletblack: I can negotiate on the price, especially if they seem not to get bought, but i usually won't sell adoptable for less than five points.

:bulletblack: Please don't ask if you can get it for a design trade/drawing/real money/ect. If you have commissions open, I could bring it up, i probably won't.

:bulletblack: Don't send the points befroe my okay...

:bulletblack: ...because you will get no refunds. If you send the points before my okay you lose them and i'll keep asking for payment.

AFTER BUYING

:bulletblack: Unless otherwise stated, you can do what you want with the adopts, you can dump them, hoard them, change them, accessories them, kill them, i don't care.

:bulletblack: The only thing i ask you don't change about them is the species, you can change wolf to dog, cat to lynx, ect. Not fox to cat or anything like that.

:bulletblack: You can sell them, but not for profit. In other words, more than you paid. This is so people don't just buy them for five points then sell them for 10. You can give them away. If you happen to get a profit, give the excess to me.

DO...

...give sufficient credit for the lineart/maker

A simple 'lineart by original owner' just won't do. When making adopts with lineart or animal creators, you should always give a link back to the creator. Even if it says it doesn't need credit, it's better to give a link back for other's who may want to use it.
Personally, i recommend giving a link to both the creator's userpage, and the original lineart/maker. A link to just the userpage is just annoying as it means having to search through his/her gallery to find the lineart/maker.

...check the date comments were made

I've had a few scruffs when I two or more people have made a request for the same adopt. Usually, the seller is smart enough to give it too the first person to comment, but this is not always the case.
I once had an occasion when i placed a request to reserve an adopt so i could draw it. I spent ages trying to make a decent picture and whilest drawing it another person asked to reserve the same adopt. I took this as no threat as i had allreay requested it, but when the seller came on (must have been on holiday or somthing) and fussed over who was worthy of the adopt. Eventually i managed to get the adopt.
I also reccomend putting a note such as 'please check the comments before you to see if someone else has requested the adopt' as this can save a little trouble.

...be creative/not use textures

There are lots of adopts out there that are just white wolves or black cats, some with only a few feelbe patterns and two colours. Or there are some that are just a texture splashed over a base. Both of these cause the adopt to be very unlikely to be bought. If you want someone to take notice of your adopt they have to have a design. That is what you're selling, basically. Adopts with textures and gradients are useless because, really, who's going to make a lovely picture and colour their adopt with a gradient. Really?
Also, try to refrain from just putting down a lot of adopts with simple colour changes. Keep in mind people are going to use these adopts as OCs. If innocent two people have different OCs, someone may find that they're simply the same with different colours and this could cause troubles.

DON'T...

...take an adopt for your own

It's pointless really, if you want to keep an adopt, consider it carefully before putting it on dA. All you're doing is making people think they can get it, they saying 'MINE, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT'.
While this seems okay if the adopt has been up for a few months and people don't seem interested in it, but I've seen adopt sheets that are only a matter of hours old with this case.

...overcharge

Depending on what your adopts were made in, you can sell them for as much as you want. However, i personally, feel adopts made in 'makers' shouldn't be sold for more than 7 points, and one with lineart for more than 30. If you made all of it, you can sell it for 100s of points, but it's rare to get it for more than 40-50 points.
